A full AC replacement covers more than swapping the outdoor unit. Here’s what’s actually part of the job:

By now you know what the job looks like. Here’s who’s actually doing it.
We have technicians working in Houston every day, which matters more on a replacement than it might sound like. Pulling the permit the City of Houston requires for a system swap, coordinating disposal of the old unit, working around whatever a decades-old duct system throws at us, all of that moves faster when the crew already knows the city instead of learning it on your job. We handle this as part of our full range of HVAC services in Houston, TX.
Lennox holds us to their installation standards every year, not just the year we first qualified as a Premier Dealer. Ask around Houston and the 4.7 star average on Google tends to hold up.
Age is usually the first thing worth checking. Past ten years old, a system enters the range where replacement starts making more financial sense than another repair.
Repair history tells its own story. One repair in five years is normal wear. Three repairs in two summers means the system is failing in pieces, not all at once.
Refrigerant type matters too. A system still running on R-22 can turn a simple leak into an expensive repair, since production and import of that refrigerant ended in the US on January 1, 2020, and recharging an old system now costs far more than it used to.
And the bill tells you something the system won’t say out loud. A unit working harder to hit the same temperature shows up on your electric bill months before it actually quits.
This isn’t something we decide for you, it’s something we help you see clearly. A system under ten years old with one failed part is almost always worth repairing. A system past that age needing a major component, a compressor or a coil, often has a repair estimate that gets you most of the way to a new system’s cost anyway.
We’ll give you both numbers before you commit to either path. Being right about which one makes sense matters more to us than which one costs more, since you’re the one who has to live with the decision through next August.
A replacement in a 1950s home inside the loop isn’t the same job as one in a five-year-old build out in a new development. Older homes sometimes come with ductwork that was patched around the original system for decades, and removing that old unit can reveal work that needs addressing before the new one goes in. Newer homes are usually a cleaner swap, closer to a straightforward exchange.
Flood exposure is worth a mention too. In lower-lying parts of Houston, we’ll often set the new condenser on a raised pad, above the typical water line for that block, rather than reinstalling it at ground level out of habit. It’s a small thing during the install and a much bigger deal the next time heavy rain sits in the street.
We look at your specific setup during the free assessment, before work begins, so there aren’t surprise costs partway through the job.
An older system loses efficiency well before it fails outright, which means it’s costing you more to run every summer it’s still in the house. A unit rated in the low SEER range works harder to hit the same temperature than a modern SEER2 system does, and that gap shows up directly on your electric bill through a Houston summer that runs longer than most.
Texas falls in the DOE’s Southeast efficiency region, which as of 2023 requires new central air systems to meet at least 14.3 SEER2, higher than the minimum required up north. Anything installed today already starts from a better baseline than a system bought even a few years ago.
We won’t hand you a made-up savings figure. What we will do is show you your current system’s rating next to what’s available now, so the number you’re working with is real.
Replacement cost depends on the equipment, the efficiency rating, and what your existing ductwork or electrical setup needs. Most full replacements land between $6,000 and $15,000, with higher-efficiency systems and larger homes toward the top of that range. A technician inspects your home first, so the number you get is based on your actual house.
Twice-a-year visits that keep a new system running the way it did the day it went in.
A seasonal check on refrigerant, airflow, and electrical components.
None of this is self awarded.
Age, repair history, and refrigerant type usually answer it. Past ten years old, still running on R-22, or a pattern of repeat repairs all point toward replacement. A newer system with one failed part is almost always worth repairing instead.
Most replacements finish in a single day. Jobs needing ductwork changes or an electrical upgrade can run longer, and we give you a realistic timeline before we start, not after.
Higher SEER means lower monthly bills, and that matters more here than in milder climates given how long Houston’s cooling season runs. We’ll walk you through where SEER2 options land on upfront cost versus long-term savings.
Straight pricing, an honest repair-or-replace answer, and a team that already knows this city.
