At The Chill Brothers, we pride ourselves on providing top-notch HVAC solutions tailored to our clients’ unique needs. We thrive on excellence, which can be seen through our many successful projects.

In this case study, we described a recent project that showcases our ability to tackle complex HVAC challenges effectively.

Identifying the Problem

Mr. Alex Melnick came to The Chill Brothers with an AC efficiency problem he and his family had faced for a few months.

They were struggling with the inconsistent temperature, leading to discomfort. This problem became worse during the peak of the summer. To make matters worse, Mr. Melnick was facing unusually high electric bills. Besides, his air conditioning unit broke down frequently, resulting in inconvenience and financial burden.

Alex’s house is located in a suburban neighborhood of Kingwood, Houston. It had an older HVAC unit that had served well in the past, but now, it is unable to keep up with the heat.

Understanding the urgency of the issue, Alex came to The Chill Brothers for a long-term solution for his air conditioning unit.

How We Approached This Issue

As soon as we received the call from Mr. Melnick, we scheduled an initial consultation. Jerry, our Comfort Specialist and a senior HVAC professional at The Chill Brothers, led this project.

Jerry has years of experience in handling AC units. Besides, he has all the licenser, certifications and credentials required to handle such a problem. During the initial consultation visit, Jerry and our other comfort specialists conducted a detailed inspection of the space and the A/C.

This includes a thorough check-up of the two-decade-old condenser, compressor, coil, furnace in the attic, ductwork, and their 9-year-old thermostat.

The outcome of the Assessment

Inefficiency in HVAC System

  • Outdated System: During the assessment, we found that the cooling unit had been operational for 18 years and at a fraction of the initial efficiency for the better part of a decade.
  • Poor Maintenance: Alex wasn’t very careful about the maintenance. This led to significant wear and tear. Eventually, this impacted the efficiency of the cooling system.
  • Air Ducts Issues: We also found that there were leaks in the ductwork, which allowed the treated air to leak through the holes. This also affected the efficiency of the HVAC system.
  • Manual Thermostat: The thermostat was outdated and manual. As a result, Alex couldn’t adjust the temperature according to his dynamically based on his schedule and occupancy.

Based on this initial assessment, Jerry and his team made a customized solution for Alex’s air conditioning system.

Solution Implementation — How we ensured a comfy living space for the Melnick family

Step 1: System Upgrade

As a first step, we decided to replace the cooling unit. For this, we have chosen an energy-efficient 4 ton two-stage Lennox unit with a 16 SEER2 efficiency rating, which met the family’s heating and cooling requirement.

For choosing the AC for Alex’s family, we have considered the size of the house and the number of occupants, the insulation of the house, the thickness of the walls directly in sunlight, the ceiling height, and kitchen ventilation, among other things. This way, we managed to come up with the right-sized 4-ton air conditioner for them.

Step 2: Ductwork Repair and Insulation

During our assessment, we had identified leaks in the air ducts. In this stage, our professionals sealed all the leaks and improved the overall insulation of the house.

This step was important because if we didn’t seal all the leaks, treated air would leak through the holes and lower the system efficiency.

Step 3: Smart Thermostat Installation

Previously, Mr. Melnick was using an outdated manual thermostat. We have now installed a programmable thermostat, which allows Alex and his family to control the AC unit remotely.

Moreover, this allows the Melnick family to schedule the temperature according to their needs for any given day. Besides, with the programmable thermostat, Alex can now see energy reports, allowing him to effectively manage energy consumption.

Step 4: Chill Maintenance Plan for the Upkeep

After setting up the new cooling system, we have designed a 21-point maintenance plan for Alex’s AC.

Our custom-tailored Chill Maintenance plan includes checking electrical wiring connections, insulation, and evaporator coil. condensate drain, refrigerant levels, supply voltage, amperage draw, air filters, thermostat setting, balance and rotation on the condensing fan motor, among other things.

Results and Client Feedback

The result of this AC replacement project was transformative. After the upgrade, the Melnick house experienced an improved IAQ and fresh ambiance. Besides, the overall comfort of the house was improved.

With this new HVAC unit, Alex and his family can enjoy consistent temperatures throughout the house, while the highly efficient AC unit helps reduce cooling costs by up to 30%.

Alex was specifically impressed with the features offered by the smart thermostat. With the smart thermostat, he can control the system remotely and set schedules tailored to the family’s lifestyle.

This has improved the level of comfort and efficiency they had never experienced before.
